APEC ministers meet in
Thailand to draw up SARS action plan
|
Date: 28 June
2003
Asia-Pacific health ministers
gathered in Thailand on Saturday to sketch out plans to prevent new
outbreaks of the SARS virus.
Representatives form the 21
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum members are expected
to open discussion on how China, where the virus first appeared in
southern Guangdong province, will now act against SARS.
Hong Kong and China, the hardest hit area of the outbreak, were
given all-clear by WHO this month, and Taiwan and Toronto Canada are
supposed to follow soon. However, there is still a fear that a fresh
outbreak could emerge again, especially in China in the next winter.
The meeting is likely to adopt an
action on SARS that will standardize health screening procedures
across the 21 members. China's deputy premier and health minister,
Wu Yi, also attended the meeting.
