Thai King Appeals for Calm
over Cambodian Crisis
|
Date: 31 January
2003
Thailand's King has appealed fro
calm amidst rising anti-Cambodia sentiment in Bangkok, after
hundreds of Thai were evacuated from Phnom Penh following riots.
About one thousand Thais began
gathering outside the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok with
discontentment after seeing new pictures of Cambodia protesters
stamping on a portrait of their beloved king.
Anti-Thai riots had spread
throughout Cambodia's capital on Wednesday night when angry mobs
attacked the Thai embassy and Thai-owned business. The riots sparked
by remarks reportedly made by a popular Thai actress that the Angkor
Wat, Cambodia's top cultural icon belonged to Thailand. The actress
has denied making the comments.
