TRAVEL GUIDE TO BANGKOK

Public Parks in Bangkok

Suan Lumphini
Named after the Buddha's birthplace in Nepal, this is Bangkok's largest and most popular park. The park is bordered by Thanon Rama IV to the South, Thanon Sarasin to the North, Thanon Witthayu to the East and Thanon Ratchadamri to the West, with entrance gates on all sides. A large artificial lake in the centre is surrounded by broad, well-tended lawns, wooded areas and walking paths. In other words, it's the best outdoor escape from Bangkok without leaving town.

One of the best times to visit the park is in the early morning. Suan Lumphini is a place of moods rather than sights. In the morning it's full of people exercising. More striking and graceful than the joggers are Chinese tai chi groups, making slow movements to music. Along the gates, vendors set up tables to dispense fresh snake blood and bile, considered a health tonic by many Thais and Chinese. Rowing boats and paddle boats can be rented at the lake. A weight-lifting area in one section becomes a miniature "muscle beach" on the weekends. Other facilities include a snack bar, several areas with tables and benches for picnics and a couple of tables where ladies serve Chinese tea. Rest rooms are placed at intervals throughout the park.

Rama IX Royal Park

Opened in 1987 to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th birthday Anniversary. This is the newest of Bangkok's green areas covering 80 hectares and includes a water park and botanical gardens. Since its opening, the latter has developed into a significant horticultural research centre. A museum with an exhibition on the life of the king sits at the centre of the park.

The park is open from 06:00 to 18:00 daily; admission is 10 baht.

Suan Rommaninat
This name was graciously given to the park by H.M. the Queen. It was a detention area before being transformed into a public park. Original constructions have been maintained such as the watch tower. Within, there is a building constructed during the reign of King Rama V which now serves as a penal museum and shop for selling products made by prisoners. The open space inside has been turned into a garden and recreation ground. You will find it located at Thanon Maha Chai on the Wat Suthat Thepwararam side.

Suan Saranrom
This is an old park, and originally a garden in the Saranrom Palace. It is now a part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Complex. The park it self was built in 1874 in the reign of King Rama V.

Saranrom, which is full of old trees, is now open to the public. In the park there is a monument of Queen Sunanda built in 1880. Her Majesty, unfortunately, died in a boat accident in Nonthaburi that same year.

Benchasiri Park
This small public park set amid tall buildings on Thanon Sukhumvit in the heart of the business area, was established to honour Her Majesty the Queen's 5th cycle (60 years.) birthday Anniversary.

Suan Chatuchak or Chatuchak Park
This is another major public park, in Bangkok, which is located on Thanon Phahon Yothin. It is a spacious park with trees and wide lawns and venue for the "weekend market".
